HISTORY: Jada Grant was a young fashion student in Grove’s Folly when the original American Crusader (Archie Masters) appeared on her couch. He was dressed in his costume, just as he had been when he’d vaished in 1944, but he was emaciated and barely coherent. Archie told her that he had come to give her his powers so she could continue the fight but that in order to gain the abilities of the American Crusader, she would have to eat a portion of his flesh. After much convincing, Jada assisted the old man in removing part of his hip and preparing it using a special ceremony. After ingesting Archie’s flesh, Jada was imbued with incredible strength, super-dense skin, and the ability to fly. Archie became a mentor, though he has remained reticent about where he was between 1944 and 2022. Jada operated as the American Crusader for nearly a year in relative secrecy, dealing with natural disasters and minor crimes before teaming up with local cryptid The Straw-Man to deal with a demonic entity (see “The Cave,” in The Adventures of the Straw-Man Volume 3).
